Alternative DNS Versions
Alternatives to Microsoft's DNS

If you install one of the server editions or either Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 (or NT4 for that matter), you get a built-in DNS server. The server is certainly more than adequate for use with Active Directory, or for Enterprise use. Some users, however, choose to use different version of DNS.  This page is a list of products that are available.

BIND - The Original

ISC Bind is an free implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS) protocols and provides an openly redistributable reference implementation of the major components of the Domain Name System, including:

You can find the details of Bind on the ISC Bind web page.

The latest version of BInd is 9.2.1 (itself a maintenence release to fix a number of bugs in 9.2.0). In general it's recommended you take the lastest version.  A Win32 port of Bind can be dowloaded from ISC in binary form (no source code).

Bind PE - from ntcanuck

Bind PE is a free version of BIND ported to work under Windows 2000 or Windows XP. It's free, and available from http://ntcanuck.com. It seems to install well, and provides support for some of the non-standard top level domain names. This product is aimed at the small business or home market, and could be very useful for companies wanting to host fully their own web or other internet site using broadband networking.

Simple DNS Plus

A simple DNS server, produced by JH Software, for home and small business use. It runs on Windows 95/98/ME, NT4/2000/XP/2003. The server is a commercial product and is licensed per server based on the number of zones supported. For up to 25 zones, you pay US$79 and for unlimited zones US$129 with discounts for additional servers.

Simple DNS Plus supports the SRV record and dynamic update, thus should fully support Active Directory. Those nice people at JH Software tell me that in their experience, it works fine. You can download a 14-day evaluation version from the JH Web site, or navigate to their on-line registration site and purchase the software.

You can find more information from the JH Software web site.

DNS Commander

Produced by DNS Plus, this provides both a GUI, CLI and a web based management solution. The makers state that this product is twice the speed of BIND.  There are two versions: the Enterprise version for individual organisations, and a Hosting edition for DNS hosting companies. Incognito, the makers of DNS Commander, also make a DHCP and DNS combined product called IP Commander, which also comes in two versions.
