Patch Management is important. No matter how you do it, you should have an effective and proactive patch management capability. SUS and Windows Update are great free tools, but may not suit everyone. SMS may be over the top for just patch management - although it's reporting and the ability to check on compliance may well provide adequate justification for SMS.
The Microsoft tools are aimed at patching Microsoft products only, which may not be adequate for IT organisations running non-MS products (which are just as vulnerable to security loopholes as any other software). For such users, the use of a 3rd party tool may be appropriate.
Here is a list of 3rd party vendors. If MS products are not for you, then take a look at one of these. At the end of the day, being and staying patched is important. So DO IT!
