Neat Scripts and Scripting Resources

Here are some neat scripts that you can use to both demonstrate the power of scripting and to customise the Windows environment.

The scripts below include both WSH scripts and comment line scripts.

Note: The scripts are all stored on this web server as *.vb_ files. Clicking on any links below will bring up the script in the browser. To save them for later use, right click the link, and select Save Target As. Save the script to your hard disk and then rename it with the .vbs extension before use.

As ever with scripts: caveat emptor!

The scripts on this site are as follows:

• ADSearchShortcut.vbs - this script creates a shortcut on the desktop that opens a window to search AD. The author is Scott Bradshaw.
• autoadminlogon.vbs - this script adds auto-admin logon. © Thomas Lee - tfl@reskit.net.
• context.defrag.vbs - this script adds Defrag to the right click context menu. © Doug Knox - dbknox@mediaone.net.
• dnsdump.cmd - a totally awesome script from Dean Wells that backs up and restores a DNS service. Recently updated - this is the latest version.
• getinfo.vbs - provides basic information about your computer.
• inventory.vbs - this script is a large one showing how to really dig down into the system for a inventory. Written by Greg Chapman but not totally his own work (so he says!)
• kburl.vbs - converts a KB article to a URL then launches IE with that URL. Written by Peter Vroomen.
• noautoadminlogon.vbs - this script removes auto-admin logon. © Thomas Lee - tfl@reskit.net.
• xp_admin_enable.vbs - enables the Administrator account on Welcome Screen in Windows XP. © Doug Knox - dbknox@mediaone.net.
• xp_chgownorg.vbs - this script changes the Registered Owner/Organisation of Windows XP. © Bill James - billjames.geo@yahoo.com.
• xp_hide_users.vbs - use this script to hide a user on the Windows XP Welcome Screen. © Doug Knox - dbknox@mediaone.net.
• xp_messenger_disable.vbs - this is a useful script to disable Windows Messenger in XP. v.
•  xp_nomsconfig.vbs - Removes the programs added by MSConfig and all other programs that run at start-up. Original author unknown.
• xp_numlock_on.vbs - turns Numlock on at start-up.  © Doug Knox - dbknox@mediaone.net.
• xp_persisthandler.vbs - add files to Search for files containing text. © Doug Knox - dbknox@mediaone.net .
• xp_taskbargrouping.vbs - use this script to change number of windows that are open before XP will start grouping them. © Doug Knox - dbknox@mediaone.net.

Sapien - home of Primal Script, which is the best scripting editor on the planet. If you are an MCT you should know this site!

Scriptomatic -This utility helps you to develop WMI scripts even if you don't know anything about WMI, Windows Script Host, or VBScript. Totally unsupported but it rocks!
